We all want to get our websites indexed by search engines and we want them to stay there, the questions about S.E.O are forever in every web-masters mind. How do I get higher rankings? Why is my website not showing up on the top pages? Why are my products not selling? Why has my page rank dropped in Google? There are endless questions about optimization which we all constantly look for answers. Some have the privilege of getting it right, you know the ones who make lots of money on the internet, and the ones who have authority sites that rank first on every page for the sites keyword. But 80% of web-masters have only a basic knowledge of optimization.
The major problem is that not everyone looks at how search engines work, most web-masters have a vague idea of what they are expected to do to get better rankings, but have no idea of how search engines view and rank their websites.
Let me start with crawling and what a search engine looks for to determine how much it will crawl a website.
1.Links – links are important to every website in an ideal world all pages in a website should link to each other and should be no more that 4 clicks away from the home page, a good link structure is a sure way of showing a search engine what is on your website, submitting site-maps really help with this as it shows the structure of your website.
2. Unique and fresh Content – The more unique and fresh content you have on your website is a big factor on how much the engine will re crawl your site, if a search engine sees that you update your site on a regular basis it will re crawl it more because it is constantly updated, do not try to cheat by copying other peoples work from the internet, search engine will know if you do this and will crawl your site less.
3.Site Feeds – site feeds are very important and have a service that you can ping with your feeds, if it see’s you are updating your content through feeds it will crawl your site more.
4.Domain Importance – This is the most important aspect of how much a search engine will crawl your site.Basically the more back links you have to your website from other websites will determine how important your site is in the ranking structure. The more links on other websites especially trusted websites the search engines see, the more it will crawl your site.
5.Viability – This is basically making sure your site does not have duplicate content of spider traps where the crawling spider is trapped in a loop make sure you have a clean structure for the spiders to crawl.
6.Specify your crawl rate -In some web-master tools you can specify your websites crawl rate to a faster or slower crawl from the robots this can play a role in how much they will crawl your site.
The above factors all determine how much your website will be crawled.
Now we can look at indexing.
There are 3 types of indexing in search engines
1.Main indexing – Which is the one we see in our main results, first page results.
2.Supplemental – This is when you have been indexed but your results are not in the top search queries or search engines feel that is not important enough to be in top 10 results.
3.Crawled but dropped – This is when you have been in the top 10 results but they drop your page from top or first page results.[Most Annoying]
How do we stay at the top?
1.Uniqueness and Value – This is the key to staying at the top if you add unique quality content that people search for, this will tell search engines that this should be at the top of the results.
2.Domain Importance – Again another big factor in indexing the more back links you have to your website the more important your site becomes, and this will keep you at the top of the queries.
3.Raw Link juice – Try to get relevant back links to your niche, example if your site is about apples try and get back links from other websites that are about apples this all helps. This principle is the same for internal and external links.
4.External Links – Try and get 2 external links on a page, this tells the search engines that someone thinks this page is important, so they keep it on the index.
5 Search and Traffic – this can also help if a search engine see lots of searches for a keyword on your site and it is getting a lot of Traffic this can also determine if your site stays in the index.
