The Internet Marketing Dictionary describes keyword research as the following: Keyword Research – “Keyword Research is the action of searching for and finding those keywords which users actually use to find specific content on the Internet.”

As online marketers, our constant goal is to achieve search engine dominance. Increasing your search engine ranking is simply done by focusing on keyword research.

I’ve mentored many individuals that have over looked this very important step. Obtaining a top search engine ranking is extremely competitive. This is mostly due to the competitiveness of the keyword phrases. When focusing on keyword phrases, there are elements that you must consider in your research.

For instance, you must focus on keyword phrases that doesn’t have strong competition, but are frequently searched for. A balance between the two must be made. It is possible for a website to have a ranked keyword phrase and not obtain its full optimization. If that phrase receive a low number of searches, that keyword is useless.

You must first find a keyword phrase that isn’t too competitive and receives an adequate number of monthly searches. The next step is to extensively check out your competitors. Less competition equals smaller bid prices. There are many keyword tools available online to assist you. Some are free to use while others charge a fee.

Upon completing your keyword research and verifying your choice of keywords and keyword phrases, it’s time to build your page around the keywords you’ve chosen. Construct your meta tags, titles, and web copy to include these keyword phrases. This will help inform the search engines what your web site content is so it may rank your website correctly.

Improving your search engine doesn’t stop here. You must also utilize link building and off page optimization tactics as well. Off page optimization demands constant effort that uses new content and additional links from third party websites. Your strategy doesn’t have to be complex. As a matter of fact, the most effective strategies are the most basic. Start with a link building plan that includes article directories, web site directories, blogs, and social bookmarking sites. Look for other resources where you can establish in bound links as well.

Remember these steps when it comes to keywords:

· Are they related to the product/services one wants to advertise,

· Does it have an adequate number of daily searches?

· What is the competition on keyword phase? Having little competition from other advertisers as possible because little competition usually means smaller bid prices. This is especially true for PPC advertisers and SEO experts. If you were an AdSense publishers it would be the opposite; highly competitive keywords with a high earning per click.

Your page should have a meaning that indicate that the user is willing to spend money (e.g. a high percentage of users searching for “iPod” might only look for general information on iPods but someone searching for “black iPod nano 8GB” most probably wants to buy one).

Since your articles can show up in the search engines for specific keywords, you’ll want to optimize” each article for a long-tailed keyword. Example below:

Long-Tailed Keyword: Black 7 Series BMW, Luxury 5 bedroom home in Aspen Colorado, Best online home based business opportunity

Short-Tailed Keyword: BMW, Luxury home, Online business

SEO is more complicated than you think. It is a set of tasks based on established techniques to increase your sites relevancy with the objective of getting a higher search engine ranking for your website. It also involves eliminating or minimizing obstacles that hinder search engines from indexing your website’s pages. Giving focus on what these set of activities would do, the following paragraphs will give you an idea of how SEO affects the overall make up of your web pages.

Keywords

SEO involves assigning or determining the most effective keyword use and selection to get a high ranking for your website. It will involve not only modifying your website’s content but also would identify the strongest types and set of keywords to work on your website.

Keywords describe the content of your web pages. SEO efforts are not only done to assign specific keywords for best results but also focus on the proper placement, density and usage of these keywords on your website. Centers of focus are noticed in the way your keywords appear on the following:

o Your meta tags
o Your titles
o Your content body
o Image ALT tags
o Hyperlinks

Body Text

Certain keyword frequency rates are observed in different parts of your web page content. Effective placement and the number of keywords play a major role in search engine optimization. In as much as keywords define your website content, it is also important in showing search engines that your website has positive composition. However, care must be observed in doing this. A mere concentration or repetition of keywords on your website would not only discount the value of keywords used on your website but could also be interpreted by search engines as spamming.

SEO follows measures so that boundaries are not crossed and that keyword placement and frequency is regulated. The activities would be evident in the obvious emphasis and use of your main keywords in your website’s texts.

Other engagement objects

The use of engagement objects is highly recommended to optimize your web pages. SEO professionals find ways so that whatever type of presentation (image, video and text) you prefer to show on your website, the search engines will still find it easy to index your pages. This part of SEO, as with working on HTML on your meta tags, is highly technical. It deals with modifying scripts to enable search engine crawlers to read even scripts and languages that are not search engine friendly. Optimizing every component that is present on your web page is dealt with to get the best possible results.

In a nutshell, SEO modifies each component that is on your web page. It is done in such a way that even the less visible parts of a web page is made search engine friendly so that crawlers can favorably index your pages. It used to be that search engines can only read text on web pages but with technological advancement, it is now possible to encourage indexing even in non-text content on a web page. This provides more opportunity for SEO professionals to get the most out of SEO tactics applied to a web page.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Methods

We all want our pages and web sites to rank as high as possible on search engines. It’s usually best if we can have the result on the first page and also it’s bets if it’s for a relevant keyword or key phrase. So how can we achieve such a goal? Search Engine Optimization or SEO is all about this. Below I will present you the best 3 methods through which you can optimize your websites.

1. Link Building

Link building is the most basic and most vital component of the entire search optimization process. Links are gold for search engines. But gold has many properties. There can be lots of gold or just a bit. There can be pure gold and less pure gold. Finally gold can be put under the form of a beautiful jewel, increasing its value or it can be a shapeless bit. All these are also true for links.

You want to have lots of links. The more the better. Take a look at your adversaries. How many backlinks do they have? You will need more. Do the best you can to post your link all over the place. Get linked, spread the word about what your page and be sure that people know you exist through links.

You will want to have high quality backlinks. Search engine optimization is all about quality. A link from an anonymous website will have no value while one from a widely known and highly ranking site will be invaluable. Be selective and go for the best.

Finally you will want your links to be placed in a nice context. Don’t use anchors like “Click me”. Use instead relevant key phrases. Also, it’s very important that the text around your link is somehow related to the content of your own site.

2. Tags Optimization

Remember all those meta tags you kind of overlook while you code? Inside that HTML file of yours, in the head section you can always find meta tags. Two of the most important such tags are the “Keywords” and “Description” ones. But there are many others as well.

The values you attribute can make the difference between right ad wrong. Spiders crawling your site will first of all look at your title tag and at your meta tags. Make sure they contain relevant keywords, which are important and related to your content.

3. Keyword among content

This might sound a bit obvious, but don’t try to score high for a keyword which can be found nowhere in the content of your page. Does your page talk about nature? Then you will have high results among nature related keywords. Use the keywords in your content!

These are all simple methods, but when used right they can achieve great results!

Basic Search Engine Optimization Tools

Search engine optimization is a time consuming process, but in the same time no website will have a real future without it. Developers spend almost ten times more time optimizing their websites than they spend actually coding them.

If you’ll take a look at how the Internet looks these days you will surely notice that there are fewer and fewer business sites which are not either based on a blog platform or an e-commerce one. So where’s the problem? Well, the less seen and less discussed issue about blog based pages is that they require tons of optimization after they have been developed. However this is not a disaster if dealt with appropriately.

So what do you do to minimize your time expenditure? It’s so simple – use tools! There are thousands of search engine optimization tools out there and most of them work really great. In the following paragraphs we’ll analyze the basic tools’ categories which can make the difference for you.

First problem you will have to deal with is to check your page rank. After all you are constantly changing the content of your website and you are trying to make everything better and optimal. So the main tool you need is a page rank checker. You want to keep track of your progress, see what has a positive effect, what has a negative one, what has an important impact and which modifications are insignificant.

A second tool you will want is a tag generator. HTML meta tags are hugely important for your website. Do you want to show up on important and relevant key phrases and keywords? Include them in your tags and include them appropriately. All those tags need to be configured correctly, so why do it manually?

Links are the gold of search engine optimization. This is why one of the most important tools you need to own is a backlink checker. You can easily see which are the links which go out from your site. But how can you check the links which come to it. Outgoing links can be easily found without using any tool, but the incoming ones will require the use of a specialized SEO tool.

It’s also important to have your content validated. Search engines spiders are very sensitive and will appreciate a perfect syntax site. So get a XHTML validator, a Javascript validator and HTML validator. These will all check how correct your syntax is and which are the spots which have lacks.

Don’t forget that time is the most valuable possession so don’t waste it! Use these automated tools and make your life easier, save your time and perfect your web pages. Search engine optimization is vital, but it should never be a burden!

SEO 101 For Your Website

Larger websites will usually need to implement much more intricate campaigns and their webmasters will have different resources in any case, so we will just ignore them for now. So here is some information on how you can promote your website:

1. Creating a good title and description. These are called meta tags and can be seen in the source of your website. The third meta tag, the keyword meta is no longer relevant for indexing for the main search engines Google and Yahoo. Your title should be up to 60-70 characters (anything longer than that will be cut off) while the descriptions should be no longer than 155 characters (this includes spacing). Anything longer than that will be cut off with three dots. The descriptions will typically appear in search results, so take some time to write something marketing oriented, something that will draw visitors to your website and make them click on your link rather than the competitors.

2. Researching and choosing keywords. Put yourself in your target audience’s shoes. What words or terms would they use to find you? Make a list of these words and check them out using various tools. Google trends and Google AdWords are a good place to start. Weigh the relevance of the keyword against the number of times its searched in a specific timeframe and once again, against the number and quality of the competition over the ranking for that keyword. For small to medium sized websites, I recommend you choose between 3-7 keywords and focus on them. Also, make sure you have a certain amount of texts on your website. Adding at least 400 words to your home page and another 200-250 words to the rest of your website is recommended.

3. Don’t Spam. Don’t overuse the keywords. The best way to use them is the most natural as an organic part of your content. To give them a push, integrate them into your description and title, use them in your headers, but don’t spam. Overusing them will deteriorate the quality of your texts and the quality of your website, and this will have a much greater impact, a negative one on your ranking as well.

4. Understanding Page Rank. The page rank was given its name after Larry Page who is one of the originators of Google. The page rank is determined by a series of algorithms and criteria which I won’t get into in this guide, but I will say that it is an assessment by Google of the importance of the web page. Page ranks vary from 0-10, while 10 basically belongs to Google. Wikipedia and the Apple site for example, have a 9 page rank. Links are a critical part of building a page rank. The more inbound links you have pointing at your website, and the better their sources, the more link juice you’ll be getting. This means, that if you have a link from Wikipedia or some other website with a high page rank it will be worth more than a link from an unimportant web page. Links that are used often will also matter more than an unused orphaned link. Using the same logic, if you use a link farm and link to your website from it, it will probably not benefit your web page ranking.

5. Create a flat architecture. Try to use as few layers as possible. If you’ve managed to get a good page rank for your homepage it will trickle down to the second and third layers. Try to create a situation in which any page on your website can be reached with a maximum of 3-4 clicks. This is also good for your users.

6. Refresh your content. The more activity on a page, the better. Google (and the other search engines) assume that it is an active and relevant page and it will improve your ranking. The more you refresh your page the more often Google will visit your website and crawl it.

7. Anchor Links. By using links anchored in texts you are informing Google what your website is about. For example, I could write, if you want free website templates visit GlobalTemplates, you’ll find some great templates there. The best links are anchored in the text as part of a paragraph. This is because Google assumes they have the highest relevance.

8. Not happy with how long its taking Google to index you? Submit your website manually. You can submit your website manually to both Google and Yahoo. To submit your website to Google, visit this page and submit your website to Yahoo here. This will shorten the process of getting your website indexed significantly and its free!
