Off-Page Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Primer

In the earlier years of search engine optimization, it was all about on-page optimization. Things like the page title, Meta tags, heading tags, comment tags, and anchor text were the only things that mattered. Keyword stuffing could easily get your website to the top of the search engines results page. If I wanted the number one position, all I had to do was copy my competitor’s page, add my keyword one more time, and viola – I’d rank first. These days, things aren’t quite that easy. In order to obtain top positioning in the search results, your website has to gain to credibility or “web cred” in order to be recognized as important.

Optimize Your Domain Name

As of this writing, appears that the search engines do weight the fact that your domain name has your keywords in it. Problem is, many SEO professionals and amateurs are exploiting this by registering domains with the keywords in it, separated by dashes. Nobody knows how long the search engines will continue to weight this factor, but none the less, it’s probably not a bad idea to include a keyword or phrase in your domain name, but don’t get out of hand: www.please-let-google-ban-my-site-because-of-all-these-words.com

The number of years your domain has, and will be, registered for also has an effect on search engine rankings. If you have an older domain name, it is generally concluded that the website is not spam and will probably be around for years to come. This makes sense – Google should give higher priority to a website that’s been around for 5 years, than give the high ranking to a brand new, untested website. It may be a good idea to acquire a domain name that been around for a few years and also contains one of your keywords. The downside is that this option may be expensive. If you don’t have the budget for that, Google also seems to give credit for the number of years that the domain is pre-registered. I’ve looked at some data, and it seems that if you register your domain for a few years out, Google assumes you don’t have a fly-by-night website and you may be entitled to a slightly higher ranking. Given the miniscule cost of registering a domain name these days, it’s probably not a bad idea to register your domain name for 3 years rather than 1.

Page Rank

Google assigns each web page a Page Rank based on the number and quality of inbound links you have pointing to your website. You can view your website’s page rank by downloading the Google Toolbar. Your page rank will be displayed as a green bar measuring from 1 to 10. Don’t worry if you only have a Page Rank of 1 or 2 – most websites do. In order to get your number up (4 or 5 is pretty good), you’ll have to get other websites to link to you.

Quality Counts More Than Quantity

As soon as webmasters realized the importance of back links, numerous schemes were hatched in an attempt to build up thousands back links very quickly. Google has since caught on, and if your website acquires too many low-quality links too fast, you may get penalized. Here are some tips to obtain the best quality back links:

One-way links are better than reciprocal links. Reciprocal links are being de-valued because it is not natural linking – it’s an arrangement between the webmasters. If you can afford it, it may be a good idea to buy some one-way links to your website.

Get links from pages with a high Page Rank because some of that will pass through to your site, increasing your own site’s Page Rank.

Get links from sites in a related industry or geographical location. I do a lot of web design in my home town of Windsor, Ontario. Therefore, I make sure that I buy or trade links from other web design related sites, Canadian, Ontario, and Windsor directories. Google will see that your site is relevant if you do this.

Make sure your keywords are included in the link from other sites. If your keyword is included in the anchor text, Google will assume that your site relates to that particular keyword.

Get a listing in Open Project Directory (DMOZ), if you can. Only the best sites get into DMOZ, and it gives your site a lot of credibility in the eyes of the search engines.

Don’t inter-link your websites! If you think you can just link all of your own websites together and improve your Page Rank, forget it. Google will see that the IP address of all domains is the same, and, either give you little or no credit, or if you have a lot of sites inter-linked, penalize you.

Let last tip I’ll leave you with is: make sure to maintain your links. Google, for one, does not immediately give you credit for your links. The age of the link plays an important role, and as the months go by, those links which were maintained for long periods of time will carry a lot of weight. Good Luck!

What You Need About Page Optimization And SEO

On page optimization refers to search engine optimization techniques used directly in the construction of web pages.

However, it is important to remember that on page optimization is about more than simply search engine optimization, it should be about optimizing the page for human readers.

When you do this, you generally make the search engines happy as well. It is important to provide visitors to your website with valuable content that makes them want to come back to your site again and again.

As well as ensuring your website is full of valuable content, it is important to pay attention to your use of keywords.

Avoid keyword stuffing as not only does it make your website look unintelligent and unprofessional, search engines have caught on and you will be penalized for over using keywords.

The ideal is to use keywords naturally and sparingly. You want to use the keywords often enough to attract search engine traffic but no more than that.

Although traditional SEO identifies a keyword density of 2-7% as being ideal for on page optimization, changes in Google’s search engine operations indicate that a density of only 1-2% may be preferable (and easier to read).

Make a list of commonly used search terms that relate to your subject and subtopics and sprinkle them throughout your site. Google’s latent semantic index (LSI) algorithm will also reward you for the use of similar phrases.

Keywords should not be limited to your page content. It is very important to include your keywords in your page titles. Search engines identify the content of your pages largely on the words used in your page titles.

Without the use of keywords in page titles, you will need to have a lot of external links pointed to that page to encourage website traffic.

When including keywords in your titles, place them as close to the beginning of the title as possible but be sure that it is readable. The page title is essential to on page optimization because it shows as the link in search engine results.

Each page of your website should have its own unique, relatively short page title which utilizes the main keywords for that page.

Remember that search engines only allow a certain number of characters to display in search results. Do not use your keywords more than two or three times in your title; for most keyword phrases, once should be enough.

When you read about “on page optimization” strategies, you will often come across the term “meta tags”, however because the use of meta tags has been greatly abused by spam the major search engines don’t give them much, if any, weight.

Most SEO professionals do not rely on the use of meta tags for on page optimization any more.

Nevertheless, if you choose to do so, only use the meta keyword and meta description tags and make sure that any word or phrase you list is actually included on your page, otherwise it may be interpreted as spam.

On page links to other relevant sites can also add to your search engine popularity. However, it is important that the links you provide are genuine and are directed to sites with related content that adds value to your visitors.

On page optimization is not difficult to implement and provided you offer your visitors high quality, relevant content, will greatly enhance your success with the search engines.

The SEO Guide Part 1

It helps you to get your web site to appear in search engine result pages (SERPs) for keywords that that are relevant to your business.

Google, MSN, and Yahoo all use their own formulas to calculate the relevance of your pages, but here are a few common factors to guarantee you will rank above those not using them. Of course, one of the most important factors you want to check out is the company’s track record of results. There are a couple of factors that have effect on your search engine positioning, here is one important one, the on-page optimization factors.

If you want a healthy return on investment (ROI) with search engine optimization (SEO), your success – or failure – hinges on the keywords you select when combined with other factors like link popularity and web site design. This would include such tasks like modifications to your keywords, description, title tags, comment tags, alt descriptions, and title descriptions of anchors and the actual text of your web page. The TITLE tag first is the most important part, the “” tag. Words people are most likely to search on put first in the title (called “keyword prominence”). Optimizing Your Title Tag. This is because most engines & directories place a high level of importance on keywords that are found in your title tag. Your page title is one long uninterrupted road sign instead of several small ones.</p> <p>If it was possible to master seo techniques, and be sure that we can get high rankings by editing just the Meta tags that would be very easy, but this is only one part of search engine optimization, but that’s just not going to happen. These factors all relate to your own site and include your domain name, page names, meta tags, keyword density, titles, headings and last but not least the content. Optimizing your meta tags and dropping a few keywords into your web site won’t pay the rent. Things like the page title, Meta tags, heading tags, comment tags, and anchor text were the only things that mattered. Back couple of years ago you could just tweak, title, headers and description on each page and by doing this you could create fantastic seo results.</p> <p>By including local information in your tags and web pages, you help prospective customers find specific information on the area and business they are searching for. Localized search engine optimization is the addition of local search terms to your tags and web pages. Keywords / Description / Alt Tags / Title Tags / Page Content.</p> <p>Make sure that all your tags properly closed and that there are no tags missing, when search engines spider your site and your pages are not complete the search engines might ignore the page. The science is formatting the pages with the right meta tags and submitting them in the right way to the search engines.</p> <p>Search Engines are also interested in the text of the site. Anchor text is the text the web visitor sees on the web page, which is hyperlinked to your domain name or URL. When submitting to other sites use your keyword phrase for your anchor text when ever possible. You can just take it that plain text is the food for search engine spiders.earch engines.</p> <p>To discover how you can become a successful online business owner and have your own profitable online business overnight, visit <b><i><a href='http://www.turboonlinebusiness.com/' target='_blank'>Online business</a></i></b>. <b><i><a href='http://www.turboonlinebusiness.com/' target='_blank'>Online business</a></i></b> has everything you need to make money online with minimal investment and effort on your part. How To Boost Your Website’s Ranking With On-page And Off-page Promotion Techniques

Unless you are already at the top of all the major search engines for all your major keywords and keyword phrases, you should see what you can do to boost your website’s ranking. The best way to boost your website ranking is to use website promotion techniques which improve the on-page and off-page factors that search engines use when prioritizing websites.

The first step in any program designed to boost your website ranking is to look at your actual web pages and see what you can do to make them truly search engine friendly. This effort to make a web page search engine friendly is commonly known as search engine optimization. Search engine optimization is basically the process of organizing your web page in such a way that the main points of the page are crystal clear to both the search engine robots and to the human beings who will eventually read the pages.

If you have a web page that explains or offers “blue electronic widgets” then these words should be put in the title tag, and again in the description tag, and in the main headline of the page. Certainly if the page is really about blue electronic widgets then you will discuss the subject and mention these words a few more times in the text. You might also link to other pages on your site that have similar content, and you could even name the file for that page as blueelectronicwidgets.html .

If you do all of these things then it is clear that this page is truly about blue electronic widgets. This will be plain to any person who looks at the page and to the search engines when they gather the data for your page. By reorganizing your web pages so that they reflect and emphasize the actual message of each page, you will have taken the first step to boost your website’s ranking in the search engines.

Web Promotion Technique for Off-page Optimization

In the highly competitive world of the Internet, you can’t stop with on-page optimization. If 100 sites all have the same content and similar optimization, then the only way to reach the top and stand out as the most relevant page in that category is to build up the amount of incoming links pointing to your website. Your link popularity is an off-page factor that has a big role in determining your website’s ranking. There are several ways to build incoming links, and you should use the web promotion technique that is most appropriate for you.

For example, if you have time search around for directories dealing with your subject. In many cases you only have to fill out a form and add your site to the directory. Often you have to exchange links. One of the most widely used web promotion techniques nowadays is reciprocal linking. When engaging in reciprocal linking, remember that the quality of your links is just as important as the quantity. Try to get links from high traffic and highly regarded sites in your field.

Another way to build incoming links is to place your content on other websites with a link back to your site. Write articles about your field and submit it to the many content hungry webmasters searching for such material. Always remember to put a link back to you site at the end of your articles.

If you take the time to optimize your pages and then engage in a link building campaign, you will see an improvement in your website’s ranking in the search engines. It won’ t happen over night, but eventually the best websites rise to the top of the rankings.
