SEO web design is essential for high search engine listings, and the right choice of SEO book can be use to achieve that. There are many SEO books on offer online, but most seem too much alike and appear to provide the same information. The best type of SEO book is one that provides graphic examples of how successful sites have become successful through effective SEO web design.

Search engine optimization is a subject about which very few have a true understanding. It starts with your website, and the way that you arrange your pages into the site as a whole. To most people, SEO is the use of keywords on your site, and I still read webpages and blog postings that promote as many keywords in a web page as possible. If it’s not the more the merrier, then it’s the 1% – 3% keyword density fallacy. Follow that and your site will disappear off the listings!

There is too much written online about SEO that too many people take as gospel. Let’s dispel a few myths and bring some reality into the whole subject of search engine optimization. Google and the other major search engines look at text relevant to the keyword, rather than repetitions of the keyword, as being good content. Too may repetitions will be punished.

That being so, it also difficult to design web page for a high listing. That is because there are so many web pages with good content: keep in mind that it is individual web pages that are listed and not complete websites. There must be other aspects of modern SEO that are relevant to high listings, but what are they? Well may you ask. That is what many SEO experts that offer their services at high prices online would also like to know.

There are, in fact, certain aspects of your website design that are totally relevant to your listing position, and they have nothing whatsoever to do with the content on each of your pages. This where the right book information can help you – if you buy the right book. This type of information is so valuable that nobody is going to give it all away free. Many sites provide a lot of free SEO information that could help you to improve your search engine listing, but only if you are also aware of the other factors that could destroy it.

I have read a lot about Google PageRank, and how you cannot get your web pages listed without a good page rank. Nonsense. I have web pages listed in the 10 on Google that have no Google page rank, at least according to the Google PageRank indicator on the Google Toolbar. Page rank is not necessary, but it helps. However, if you apply other, more important, aspects of search engine optimization to your web pages then PageRank become relatively unimportant.

On the other hand, if you do not apply these SEO techniques, PageRank becomes paramount. It is common sense. Google does not put more emphasis on one aspect of optimization than another, and while external links are important, they are not critical, no matter what you read. Google states that they give a great deal of emphasis to incoming links from other relevant web pages, yet pages can be listed highly without them against stiff opposition.

How is that? It is due to good onsite optimization, and a great deal of thought put into the design of a total website, rather than web pages individually, and the way that onsite links are designed. SEO design is not a matter of believing what theory SEO book information tells you, but of personal experience, unless you are reading the right SEO book.

So get rid of preconceptions and don’t believe all that you read. It is easy to get listed on Google in less than 2 days if you know how to do it, and also to get listed in the top 10 in two weeks if you go about it the right way.

Stop bleating and get your head down. Study the subject and don’t complain if you fail. Others don’t so find out what they do and you do the same: if they let you!

A search engine optimization expert’s job is constantly changing. If you don’t stay on top of the news by persistently keeping abreast of the technologies, information and developments, and even experimentation to find the best results, you will be outdated.

Here we are going to discuss some Search Engine Optimization Myths, these are the usual claims like ‘guaranteed rankings’ and ‘permanent rankings’. Meta Tags – once used for assisting webmasters, meta tags were a good way for search engines to find relevant content. As always though, people improvised and started using irrelevant keywords in the Meta tags to misguide search engines. Meta tags have since become a SEO myth that some people still concentrate on; others that are up to date in the business understand it to be a story of the days gone by.

Another SEO Myth is the use of multiple domain names. While some people believe the use of multiple domain names will get them higher rankings, the easiest way to find out if it works is to look at the successful sites: Ebay, Amazon, and even GameSpot, rank high in the search engines in their respective domains, yet they have hundreds of pages worth of content. If it was so useful to have multiple domain names, why would those sites ignore the brilliant idea and not split their content into different sites? The fact of the matter is that by splitting content you can limit the potential of your website while by creating mirror sites, you are very likely to be ignored by the search engines altogether. The process also takes longer to optimize each site and build reasonable, and relevant, link exchange programs…and that is when we totally ignore the fact that you pay 10-15 times extra to get the same number of mirror sites created and hosted.

Doorway and gateway pages are result pages created by so called SEO experts who use automated programs to create optimized pages for your site that are Search Engine specific. These result pages do not link to your site or add informational value to your content, they are supposedly there to get your rankings up. Of course, these result pages are different for each search engine and that leads us to the question, how do you optimize a page for Alta-Vista and Google at the same time if, theoretically and most probably, their requirement for keyword density is different? The answer is simple, you don’t. The use of gateway or doorway pages was a practice that Alta-Vista banned from its rankings back in 2001, and Google does not allow it either. It is an unethical practice that has nothing to do with the creation of good content which is the end aim of all search engine searches.

Resubmitting the site to the search engines every week is another one of the myths that are not likely to get you any results. Why would it? The companies that offer services such as this usually offer to submit to numerous search engines every week. But who needs submitting the sites to all those search engines? The commonly used search engines are barely a dozen and those are the ones that matter because people just do not use the rest often enough to pay attention to them. Additionally, resubmission is an excessive practice, a waste of time since the search engine already has your site listed, and so multiple resubmissions can be termed spamming, and another unethical practice that Google, for one, does not appreciate. In fact, there is a theory that they actually downgrade such sites – would you pay to downgrade your site for perhaps the most widely used search engine? I wouldn’t.

Search Engine Friendly

Frames are becoming a way of the past what with the use of DIV layers and the slow onset of incredibly flexible AJAX coding. The long and the short of it is that if you have Frames on your website then you are starting off at a disadvantaged position that cannot be truly search engine friendly no matter what you do. There are, however, some remedial fixes that will tie you over until you can redesign your site; yes I said redesign. The fix that I recommend is to use a noframes tag whereby you place another version of your web page inside of your framed page. This ‘backup’ page is what the search engines will view; here you can place relevant content and navigational elements so that the search engines can at least navigate portions of your site that are (hopefully) not framed.

There was a big brouhaha that Flash had become search engine indexable and you no longer had to worry about its search engine issues. Frankly, I have not seen the fruits of this ‘improvement’ to a respectable degree yet so I still consider it a kiss of death for websites designed solely in Flash. If you have a Flash-only website then I recommend one of these two options; one is to design an html version of your website and make the home page of your website html rather than Flash where you can then allow users to choose between html or Flash. The second option is to redesign the site so that it mixes both html and flash together. For example, this might mean implementing Flash amidst content on an HTML page as you would an image. I realize there are certain limitations to this option but if you can create a slick site in this manner then you will have the best of both worlds; clean search engine friendly content along with an interactive, multimedia feel. Just remember that the majority of relevant text should be in HTML format for the search engines to index.

Unfriendly dynamic URL’s are a common side effect of using a Content Management System that is not designed with search engine rankings kept in mind. Here are some examples of some unfriendly URL’s. Sample 1: http://www.mydomain.com/myproducts.php&354=prod333&subproduct

These URLs are problematic because a search engine may consider these addresses too complex to spider. Why too complex? Suffice it to say that the more complex the URL, the higher the chance that a search engine robot will consider the content too dynamic to read; it changes too often to be valuable to a search engine.

The way around these types of URLs is actually not so difficult; it may only require a small investment of time and money. The ‘time’ will be required when researching which URL fix is right for your system. The money may be required to pay a programmer to implement and test the new URLs. Here are how the URLs might look once they are fixed to be search engine friendly. Sample Fixed: http://www.mydomain.com/myproducts/354/prod333/subproduct/

These URLs are better because they do not include the extraneous characters that are so telltale on dynamic websites. In addition, the URLs are designed to appear like normal website directories when in fact they are dynamic URLs. It is vital that you minimize the length of the URLs that you use. Search engines may stop crawling a website if there appear to be too many subdirectories. The samples above show fixed URLs that have about as many subdirectories as I would allow (4).

Are the menus on your website spiderable? If not you may be hiding major areas of your website from search engine spiders and missing out on additional search engine rankings.

The fact is there are very few menus out there that a search engine will have a problem following, but there are definitely some worth avoiding. For instance do not use a JavaScript Jump Menu (example) as the core mode of navigation of your website; search engines cannot index this type of menu. Also be careful of Flash menus, they look slick but they will impede the progress of a search engine spider especially if they are the only means of navigation within your site.

The ideal menu would be text based and each text link would include the keywords you are targeting on the destination page. Setting up a menu with this much forethought requires that you determine the layout and content for your site before web design begins. Once you have a clear picture of the content for each page you can then research the keywords that are best to target per webpage. This essential keyword research can be done in house easily enough using systems-like keyword research tools that provide you with a glimpse into how your customers think by showing how many searches there are per month (or year) for a particular term.

Remember, almost every page within your site has a very real opportunity to gain a top ranking; all you need to do is ensure that the design, content and site structure is optimized. Ensuring that the menu is carefully thought out and designed is a crucial step for top rankings. Finally, if you are at all uncertain whether your menu is search engine friendly then be certain to back it up with a text menu in the footer of your page using the same keyword targeting principles noted above. A simple text menu may be less than desirable for you; in this case I recommend DHTML menus. These menus use text but in a manner that is quite appealing and very search engine friendly.

Sitemaps can dramatically help the visibility of your website by allowing search engine spiders easy access to all of the pages in your site. Place a link to the sitemap on every page within your site to ensure easy access no matter where a search engine or user enters your site. Just having a sitemap will help but how you build your sitemap will also play a role in how well the search engines catalogue it. For example, if you have a twenty-page website it would be ideal to create a sitemap where each page is represented by a title along with a short description. Ultimately, the page may be a bit long but it will have content that the search engines like to index and it will boost the relevance of the linked pages because the titles will accurately represent the content. So in effect, you will now have more than just a sitemap; you will have a table of contents for your site that has the potential of getting a ranking and provides an extra boost to the ranking worthiness of each page.

Search engine robots read a webpage from the top of the source code (the programming that made your page – see “view source” in your browser) all the way to the bottom. As a result, it is important to ensure that both of the following elements are found as close to the beginning of code as possible: A short sentence introducing the topic using the keyword targets you have chosen for the page. Your text menu and other navigational aids, or if this is not possible it would be even more beneficial to start with a paragraph or two of relevant content followed by the navigation. By placing this information near to the top of the page, you will promptly present the search engine robot with relevant text that backs up the page title and backlinks. You will also provide an immediate sitemap of sorts for the search engine to spider, which includes keywords relevant to each page.

With the odd exception Splash Pages are a kiss of death for a website because the home page (the first page seen when someone visits your domain), your most important page, is often converted into nothing but an excess entry point with little or no relevant content on it. Aside from reducing your chances for ranking, you are also making your visitors take another step to get to content or sales material in your site. Any additional steps you add will lessen the likelihood of a successful sale.

If you think you need to use a splash page then you need to talk to someone who will change your mind. No, honestly, give me a call if you want because there is nothing more painful to a SEO or search engine friendly web designer than to see a Splash Page in use. If, in the unlikely scenario your splash page is required, there are ways to make it slightly more search engine friendly. Add a highly relevant and well-worded paragraph to the page so that the search engines have something to index that shows them they are in the right place. Either provide a link to your sitemap or implement a text menu in the footer of the page so the search engines can access the internal workings of your website without having to take an extra step.

The Linking Strategy

In this article I’m going to be walking you through the second most important part of setting up your search engine optimized empire.

So what is it? What other factor coupled with your keyword dense articles will enable you to top giants like Google, Yahoo and MSN. Well it’s the online equivalent of getting “votes” for your web site. It is called getting links, and it is a hell of a lot easier than you think.

What are spiders and what purpose do they serve?

Spiders are essentially programs that “crawl” sites and report back to their superior (Google or whatever search engine they were created for) what their findings are. Their purpose is to make it easy for sites to get listed in search engines.

You might be wondering, what does it mean to “crawl” a site? Well it means to visit a site and copy the information.

How do spiders work?

Spiders work by finding links to web sites, visiting those web sites, going through the content of a web site and then reporting the content of the site back to the database of the site which they are working for. Google spiders, thus, crawl sites and report the information back to Google’s database. From there, the information is added to Google’s search engine, and the site then shows up in Google search results. Much the same process happens with any other search engine spider.

So what does this mean to you? Well essentially by having good quality and relevant content on your web site (your optimized articles) you’ll be pleasing the spiders. If you have links from other sites related to your content too you’re way, way ahead of the pack.

Now here’s the clever part. All you need to do to get links back to your web site is submit articles to article directories or write a press release related to your niche market. Link back to your site from the bottom of that article or press release.

Other web site owners in your niche will be looking for content to add to their own site, and will visit article directories to do so. They’ll pick up your article, add it to their site (they’ll have to legally keep your link in the article) so now you have other sites linking to yours all over the place! This will impress the hell out of the spiders and you’ll start to rank extremely well in the search engines.

To find article directories simply go to Google and type in “article directory” you will find absolutely tons!

There’s more…

As I said press releases are another great way to get links back to your web site. Not only that they are a great way to get free publicity for your ebook or web site. Write a press release and submit it to prweb.com. It will cost you a little to have them blast it all over the internet but it will mean that you get dozens, hundreds or even thousands of one way links back to your site catapulting you up the search engines.
