The second option puts a new set of keywords into your SEO basket. If someone does a Google search for “information products” or “slow economy”, you are actually giving Google the tools to help them find your site.

This setting can be changed in WordPress 2.5 by going to Settings and selecting Permalinks and in earlier versions of WordPress by going to Options and selecting Permalinks.

Types Of Permalinks

The WordPress Codex is the online information manual for WordPress. It defines Permalink types as follows:

There are three basic types of WordPress permalinks:

Default: “Ugly” …biz/?p=128
mod_rewrite: “Pretty Permalinks” …biz/category/post-name or …biz/year/month/day/post-name
PATHINFO: “Almost Pretty”…biz/index.php/yyyy/mm/dd/post-name/
The available tags in your Permalinks can be:

%year% – the year
%monthnum% – the number of the month
% day% – the day of the month (not Tuesday)
%hour% – the hour using a 24 hour clock
%minute% – the minutes
%second% – the seconds
% category% – the category under which your content is posted
%author% – the designated author which is useful if multiple writers are providing content
%postname% – the name of the content
%post_id% – the unique ID for each content entry or bog post
The unique ID # of the content referenced in this article, for example is 128

For most organic SEO purposes, it is best to change the WordPress code for each blog post entry. Don’t keep the standard setting and keep the “?p=number” code.

You Have Options

The blog title or %postname% is often chosen as the best option. This will give you organic SEO for the words in the title of your blog post. So if you chose your content titles wisely, you can have Google working for you on each of those words.

But you can also choose to categorize some or all of your content under a category called “Weekly Favorites” for example. Then you either include a date in your title or add in %year% %monthnum% %postname% so people can ID what week is in question.

This can be an option for a monthly content series for example. Each monthly content post would have the permalink code with the year, the month and the title on your blog post.

It is difficult to imagine using the permalink code to specify minutes.

Having the unique ID number for each post and the content title (%post_id% and %postname% ) would give this using the previous example would appear as

…biz/?p=128/information-products-can-save-your-business-in-a-slow-economy/
It looks a little too odd for humans and the search engines do not need to use the ID number here.

WordPress Suggests

The WordPress codex suggests using the following to identify each of your blog posts:

/%year%/%monthnum%/% day%/%postname%/. – year, month, day, post title.

The Good, The Bad…

The good news is that when you go into your WordPress software you set it up once and it works for all of your blog posts.

The bad news is:

If you keep changing your settings you will lose the visitors to your pages who are getting to you through old links.
And if you already have a WordPress blog all of your old post links will become invalid. Everything is changed on your website – the old blog posts and the future blog posts. So if you have many people who have bookmarked individual blog posts, they will lose that direct link.
Established WordPress blogs will want an experienced person to make this change. It is possible. It only needs to be done once. But if you don’t want to cut your links off it is a bit more complicated.

Your boat, you go float in it.

…And The Great

You can decide which words you would like your prospects or readers to find you with.

You can only give them the option of finding you with the name of your website.
You can also give them numerous other options: they can find your website through the different titles you give to of each of your blog posts.
This gives you more key words to rank high on the search engines.

The businesses that opt for a WordPress platform have a huge Organic SEO advantage over any other type of website.

SEO – Alchemy For The Internet

Let’s face it, Google rewards unique content. The more unique the content, the better chance your website has of being ranked in the coveted top spot on Google’s natural search results.

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is Alchemy for the internet. SEO services are a trunk of tools, techniques and methods that modify how a search engine crawler ranks a page in its index of returns. Potions and elixirs take the form of SEO services and SEO technology that measure and modify how a site relates its content to a major search engine crawler.

For as long as the website has been part of the internet experience, there has been SEO technology to maximize page ranking. For as long as there has been SEO technology there has been a right way and a wrong way to deploy SEO services and technology.

SEO services fall into two of general categories. White hat services are good and promote a search engines primary goal of providing relevant results to search strings. Black hat SEO services are bad and utilize techniques that are contrary to a search engines primary goal and provide irrelevant results. When considering which to use keep in mind that a search engines success depends on a search engines ability to provide users with quality results. Search engines are optimized to detect bad SEO services for survival.

Good SEO services include core concepts that websites be “genetically” designed for search engines. This concept of a good service includes optimizing the basic structure, coding and content of the site so that search engine crawlers and indexers will naturally rank a page high. Bad services employ techniques like keyword stuffing and link farms to enhance their ratings. Using bad SEO technology can result in a search engine denying a sites placement if use of bad SEO technology is discovered.

Simply put, SEO technology that is deployed to simply get the attention of search engine crawlers will not be as effective as technology that is designed to get the attention of search engine users. It becomes a matter of choice between black hat and white hat techniques. White hat techniques are the good guys, target your SEO technology with the good guys and your site will fare much better with search engines in the long run.

Remember, that the ultimate goal here is to take full advantage of the best SEO tools, techniques and methods to optimize your website to drive traffic. Without the proper optimization you’re website is just out there floating around in a “parked” position in cyberspace.

Choosing A Reputable SEO Firm

Choosing a reputable SEO Firm can be daunting, with so little knowledge available on what to look for. So the goal of this article is to give you the three key scams to watch out for, when searching for a reputable SEO Firm:

SEO WANNA-BE’S

Search engine optimization is one of those unknown fields that has no established standards. Anyone can say they are an SEO or can do SEO work, but that does not mean they have the talent, time or tools to produce any results. There are also programs that claim to help search engine ranking. They do not work either. Period.

An easy way to spot an unknowledgeable SEO or a web designer who poses as an SEO is to ask them if they optimized your site when they designed it. They will answer, “Oh yeah, I optimized it.”

That is equivalent to saying, “Oh yeah, I’ve been worked out.” Working out and SEO are never one time events. They are always on-going projects.

SEO SUBMISSION SCAMS

A lot of companies will also call people and tell them that they will submit their sites to 2000 directories, which will build their search engine ranking. It is a form of link campaigning–albeit lopsided and one-dimensional. The problem with these “auto-submissions” is that the directories to which they are submitting have safe-guards in place to reject these kinds of mass submissions. Now, here is the scam: the company has technically done what they promised they would do, SUBMIT your site, even though 99% of those submissions will be rejected and thus be of no use to building a client’s search engine ranking.

SEO KEYWORD SCAMS
A scam SEO will come to you and say, “We can get you a #1 ranking for ‘Molly Lynn Morgan Real Estate.” They can probably do that for you. Unfortunately, none of your potential clients are going to Google and typing in that phrase.

More sophisticated SEOs will come to you and tell you, “I will try to get you the ranking ‘Real Estate in Middle Tennessee.’” That sounds like a wonderful phrase to dominate, but their data has told them that no legitimate SEOs are going after that phrase; because, again, while it might sound good, very few people are actually typing that in. People are actually most often using either ‘Nashville Real Estate’ or ‘Nashville Tennessee Real Estate.’

What a legitimate SEO will do (like we do here at Nashville SEO Info) is to show you the actual data. We will show you the exact numbers of how many people per month are searching for the product or services you offer and what exact keyphrases they are typing in. We won’t go after any of the silly phrases above. We will show you the data AND LET YOU CHOOSE!

Seven Things To Look For In An SEO Firm

Your rankings on major search engines can make a difference between success and failure online. It takes time, skill, and persistence to keep on top of the search results-which is why many businesses hire professionals. A good search engine optimization (SEO) firm can put you high in the rankings. But a bad one can get you expelled from Google.

The firm you choose to handle your SEO is crucial to your success. So how do you pick the right one? Here are seven things to look for in picking an SEO firm.

Experience. Don’t hire an SEO firm that’s been in business for fewer than two years. It takes time to learn how to optimize a website-and for the first couple of years, most businesses are still experimenting to find the best approach to use. Choose a firm that knows exactly how to promote your site, not one that’s still figuring things out.

Recommendations. A well-regarded SEO firm should have a long list of happy clients. Ask the firm you’re considering for links to sites they’ve worked on. Are the sites easy to navigate? Do a web search for keywords relevant to each site. Does it come up in the search results? Contact the owner. Did he or she like working with the firm, and did they do a good job?

Realistic promises. Some SEO firms will guarantee top rankings, but it’s never a good idea to choose a firm that offers these promises. That’s because SEO is like advertising. No matter how good your ad agency is, it can’t guarantee a certain response for your next TV spot. And if an SEO firm offers a guarantee for top rankings, that could put pressure on the firm to use less-than-ethical tactics to meet the guarantee. In the long run, it’s your site that will suffer from these tactics.

An analysis of your competitors. The best SEO firms will look at your competition as closely as they’ll look at your own site. Your competition can tell your SEO firm a lot about how to promote you. They should be able to apply their successes to your site, and help you take advantage of their failures.

No “partnerships” with search engines. Some firms advertise a partnership with one or more search engines. Watch out for these guys. The three search engines that matter have no partnerships with specific SEO firms. Nobody has any insider information-if they did, it would damage the search engine’s ability to deliver relevant results.

A focus on the big three. Those three search engines that matter, by the way, are Google, Yahoo!, and MSN. Watch out for SEO companies that tell you they’ll submit you to hundreds or thousands of search engines. They sometimes do this to sound impressive, assuming prospects won’t know the difference.

Sustainable practices. There’s plenty of debate within the SEO community about whether using “black hat” tactics to manipulate search engines are truly unethical or not. But no matter which side you’re on, the community agrees it’s unethical to use black hat tactics on client sites. That’s because search engines change their algorithms frequently to weed out artificial results. Your site could be at the top of the search results one day, only to disappear the next. Even worse, your site could get banned for trying to “game” the search engines.

“White hat” techniques transform your site into one that search engines want to promote, not one they’re constantly trying to weed out. The results take longer to see, but they’re safer and more stable. Your SEO firm should be committed to sustainable results for its clients.

Choosing the right SEO firm is crucial to the success of your online business. Follow these tips, and you’re sure to find a valuable business partner who can help you take your e-business to the next level.

How To Not Get Lost In The SEO World

The ever-increasing level of competition in the Web these days is like a mad scramble for most businesses, with thousands of sites and affiliates boxing-out each other for niche markets, increased traffic, and higher sales.

Website and business owners who spend money on optimizing their websites in the search engines want to know they are getting a good return on their investments. SEO firms and experts need concrete numbers to show that the campaign is working, and that they should continue to invest in optimization.

According to the experts, there are several good reasons why you should measure your SEO efforts, so that you wouldn’t go astray in terms of direction or investment. First, you need to justify how much you’re spending to management, your client, or whoever holds you responsible for getting traffic to your website. Second, is to make sure that all the time and funds you’re spending on SEO is actually working. Third, to enable you to secure more money for next year’s SEO budget. And lastly, to enable you to stay competitive always.

It is also notable to take note that you should understand industry averages, such as how much the average website owner spends on outsourcing SEO, and this could range from $100 to $500 per web page for example, and what sort of return you can expect to receive for paying premium cash. In finding out these spending averages, you are fully equipped with the knowledge when formulating a plan that will convince yourself, or the higher-ups, to spend the money on SEO.

Tips On How Not To Get Lost In The SEO World

It is far better to get started on your SEO journey of learning and make a couple mistakes, than to let months go by, never make a mistake and never get started. Here are a few tips on succeeding, and in preventing yourself from getting lost in the wide, and sometimes tricky world of SEO.

* Make a firm decision to get started. There are a lot of people who will buy a program or purchase a product, but for some reason have difficulty in getting to know how to use it: as a result, they never do.

* Gain self-confidence through experience and constant practice. Far too many people hesitate to try out their ideas. The sooner you strengthen your confidence, the sooner you will realize the potential for what you can achieve and do. In the beginning, start with a few of your own sites where you have full creative liberty without encountering the demands or pressures that come from a client.

* Gather advice from the SEO community by visiting respected forums and discussion groups. Although at times you may not get leading edge stuff, since most of that costs a lot of money, however you will get an awesome amount of pertinent information. Plus, you’ll also hear both sides of a story, both the pros and cons, from the debates that seethe within the community.

* Subscribe to reputable newsletters and learn from what the experts say. Many of them are free to sign up to and they can be a wonderful venue to start learning.
