Do Outbound Links Possess Search Engine Supremacy?

Not enough that rent [town name] against [town name] rent is going to explain the differences I am seeing.

But the fact of the matter is that the lower page rank web site gets 4 times the visitors of the other site. When we are submitting articles for the higher ranking website, its visitors increases. But, as soon as we stop, it drops back to the 25% mark.

Each page is ever so slightly different with a small thesaurus applied to the text, but not that much different. In essence, the web sites are the same.

So why does the newer, lower Page Rank, totally ignored website get 4 times the traffic of the website that I have lavished plenty of hours on trying to increase its traffic.

At this point I looked at the traffic stats merely to see where traffic were finding the web-sites. The lower visitors web site had a few searches for odd terms. The search engines obviously picking up cottage names and descriptions from deep within the website. So they are trawling the web site well (some inner pages have Page Ranks of 2).

For the poorer cousin with heaps of traffic, the main search results were [town name] rent and so on. The sort of searches that are more abundant, produce more visitors and are more competitive.

So, though there is a lack of search engine optimisation and Page Ranking, it is doing better in the search results. For this reason I started to look at the town pages of both website to see where and how often the word rent was mentioned and also the same for the particular town.

Basically, looking at the town name, the web-sites were near enough the same. OK, one site has “rent” before the town name and the other after it, but the search engine results showed both versions anyway – if anything, more favoured the way they were shown in the lower ranking site.

There was just one instance of the words rent and the town name on the higher visitors site that the lower traffic website did not use. And that was in the breadcrumbs!

The higher traffic web site offers links to the higher level pages and the existing page through the breadcrumbs, the lower visitors website merely relied on the main navigation to cover it.

So, there is an obvious change and an equally obvious conclusion. The difference in traffic is because one website has an outbound link containing the search terms. Why would this be? That is for another time?

Instead, a term like “buy new coffee mug” would be much more fitting. Don’t be afraid to break out the thesaurus either!

Another confounding factor of keyword generation is that you don’t want your site reaching the wrong consumers! If you own a coffee mug website, you don’t want the word “yahoo” or “coffee beans” in your keywords. This will lead to frustrated consumers being led to your site when you don’t offer the services they want. These consumers will not stay on your site and you will waste bandwidth resources and money.

When you have the list that you came up with, talk to your friends and family about what words may be good for your site. Also, look at what keywords your competitors are using in their meta-tags. When you have a list of about twenty keywords you want to use in your internet marketing campaign, we highly suggest using the free Google AdWords keyword tool, or a paid for Wordtracker tool to get more ideas and see how your keywords rank with other sites. If the keywords you chose are already being employed by a thousand other sites, then come up with something new and original that will get you above their ranking on search engines.

Your next task is to figure out where you want to put your keywords in your pages. Each page should have a maximum of 5-7 keywords. You’re not limited to putting your keywords only in your meta-tags! You can also put them in your title and in “Alt text” fields in your various pages.
