How To Not Get Lost In The SEO World

The ever-increasing level of competition in the Web these days is like a mad scramble for most businesses, with thousands of sites and affiliates boxing-out each other for niche markets, increased traffic, and higher sales.

Website and business owners who spend money on optimizing their websites in the search engines want to know they are getting a good return on their investments. SEO firms and experts need concrete numbers to show that the campaign is working, and that they should continue to invest in optimization.

According to the experts, there are several good reasons why you should measure your SEO efforts, so that you wouldn’t go astray in terms of direction or investment. First, you need to justify how much you’re spending to management, your client, or whoever holds you responsible for getting traffic to your website. Second, is to make sure that all the time and funds you’re spending on SEO is actually working. Third, to enable you to secure more money for next year’s SEO budget. And lastly, to enable you to stay competitive always.

It is also notable to take note that you should understand industry averages, such as how much the average website owner spends on outsourcing SEO, and this could range from $100 to $500 per web page for example, and what sort of return you can expect to receive for paying premium cash. In finding out these spending averages, you are fully equipped with the knowledge when formulating a plan that will convince yourself, or the higher-ups, to spend the money on SEO.

Tips On How Not To Get Lost In The SEO World

It is far better to get started on your SEO journey of learning and make a couple mistakes, than to let months go by, never make a mistake and never get started. Here are a few tips on succeeding, and in preventing yourself from getting lost in the wide, and sometimes tricky world of SEO.

* Make a firm decision to get started. There are a lot of people who will buy a program or purchase a product, but for some reason have difficulty in getting to know how to use it: as a result, they never do.

* Gain self-confidence through experience and constant practice. Far too many people hesitate to try out their ideas. The sooner you strengthen your confidence, the sooner you will realize the potential for what you can achieve and do. In the beginning, start with a few of your own sites where you have full creative liberty without encountering the demands or pressures that come from a client.

* Gather advice from the SEO community by visiting respected forums and discussion groups. Although at times you may not get leading edge stuff, since most of that costs a lot of money, however you will get an awesome amount of pertinent information. Plus, you’ll also hear both sides of a story, both the pros and cons, from the debates that seethe within the community.

* Subscribe to reputable newsletters and learn from what the experts say. Many of them are free to sign up to and they can be a wonderful venue to start learning.

Getting Your Webpage Up Online

Regardless of the purpose of the web page, the process to set one up is the same: design the website, register domain names and hosting. While there are more specific things a website owner can do, these are the most basic activities one needs to do in order to get a functional web page.

The domain name system is the glue of the internet. It binds the text you type into your browser’s location bar to the address that corresponds to your desired site. Without it, users would be forced to memorize sequences of up to twelve digits or even longer just to pull up Amazon.com. But how does it all work? Where does this translation take place?

Background

The domain name system is distributed throughout the internet. It consists of “authoritative servers,” each of which provides address translation capabilities for systems under its domain. Each subdomain under the root domain also has an authoritative server. Authoritative servers on the top of the domain hierarchy, such as the one assigned to domainname[dot]com, receive information regarding other domains on the internet from servers called root servers. Once a server is given the address of a domain name from a root server, it stores it for access in a DNS cache server by systems in its domain.

The DNS and You

So how does your computer interact with the domain name system to retrieve an address? In plain English, when you type an address into a program that accesses the internet, your operating system searches through a list it keeps of domains you’ve looked up previously. If the domain is in this list, the operating system gives the program the associated address. If not, your operating system sends a lookup request to your defined DNS server. This server then searches through the records it has stored from prior queries to find the translation for your particular query. If it finds one, it returns the address associated with the domain name to your computer, which can then communicate directly with the system at that address. If your local name server cannot find the domain name you entered, your request may be passed up the line to a higher-level server, which performs the same check. This process continues until the corresponding address is returned or an error is generated. This is why if you mistype a web address, it may take a few seconds for your query to get passed along the chain until it is determined that such an address does not exist in the DNS database. That explains how the name you type is translated to a physical address to which your computer can send data.

Digging Deeper

Is it really that simple? Not always. Host names and IP addresses do not always have a one-to-one relationship. There can be more than one host name per IP address and more than one IP address per host name. In the former situation, a host may only use one IP address but serve many “virtual hosts” beneath the top-level host. This is how popular web hosting sites work, where thousands of users can set up websites on the same system.

Conversely, multiple IP addresses can point to the same host. This helps a large and extremely popular site like Amazon.com to deal with the deluge of traffic it receives. This also allows critical sites to maintain connectivity even if one of its addresses is inaccessible.

The domain name system is taken for granted by billions of people around the world, but it is among the many components that work behind the scenes to support the internet we rely on every day.

This step is to get domain name hosting. Your website needs to exist on a computer that has constant access to the web. These computers are called servers and they host the HTML, Java, and other code for your web page. When someone types in your web page’s name into their browser, the name servers will tell your browser where to go and it will find your web page on the host computer. Like a registrar, hosting providers can be found online and many offer different perks and features. Additionally, many registrars offer hosting options so you can get one stop shopping convenience. There are free hosting possibilities on the Internet but not as many as there used to be. Be warned though; you will usually get what you paid for.

Certainly, there is a lot more you can do with your web page. For example, one will want to get their page listed on the major search engines. There are also services like Google Analytics that will allow you to monitor the traffic that comes to your page. You will have to add some code to your website but the process is not difficult. If you have a business, adding the address for your website on to your business cards or Yellow Page listing will prove quite beneficial. Remember the three basic steps: design website, register domain, and get domain name web host.

Geo Targeting and Search Engine Optimisation

Search Engine Marketing is all about getting higher on Google. A website owner targeting an international audience needs to ask the question – Which Google am I trying to get more traffic from? Google forces people to use one of its Google country specific domains for searches done in each country. How does Geographic targeting of searches and search engine optimization happen?

When you look at Google’s results on Google.com.au as compared to say Google.co.nz for the same keyword, you will see that there are different results for each search. Searches on the Google.com.au Australian  shows more Australian websites as compared to the same search on the alternative Google searches.

In other words there is a bias on different country searches to each specific country.

How does the bias work??? How can you work the geo targeting bias in your favor??? How do you get to the top with 1 domain name for many alternate countries, beating the bias of that countries own websites??? What is the best technique of search engine marketing your web site? Its time for Geo Targeting of web sites.

How is a web site geo targeted?

  • If a web sites domain is country specific (ie .co.nz, .co.uk, .com.au), then it is geotargeted to that country only
  • If a domain name is non country specific (ie .com, .net, .info), then by default it is geographical targeted to the country that it is hosted in. ie a .com hosted in New Zealand is treated as a New Zealand website for geotargeting.
  • Via Google webmaster tools, you are able to geotarget a non country specific domain to any country ie geotarget a .com hosted in New Zealand to Australia.

Can a website be geo targeted to a number of different countries?

Yes! Via Google webmaster tools, you are able to add not just the main domain.com, but also add subdomains like domain.com/au/. You can then specifically geo target that subdirectory to a certain country. All pages within that subdirectory are therefore geo targeted to that same country

Therefore you can have one domain that is able to compete on an even foot with the websites of each country. One web site is able to have the same country bias as each countries own web sites.

How are searches geographic targeted

There is a country bias on Google.com searches based on the country of the IP address that you are searching via. For example, if you are using an ISP (internet service provider) of New Zealand, then based on the IP address that you are searching from, you will be given search results biased to that country. If you are searching on Google.mg from a New Zealand IP address, then there is no ISP bias, just the country bias attached to that specific countries searches.

The problem with many domains

You have an alternative. Either create a different web site for numerous domains – ie domain.com, domain.com.au, domain.co.nz etc, or have one domain.com that is targeted to many countries domain.com/au, domain.com/nz, domain.com/uk etc

A number of domains means that each domain needs its own inbound links and each domain needs unique content so as to not have duplicate content issues. Each website needs to be updated via its own cms each time updates are needed.

One domain means one web site to maintain, one domain to get links for, and duplicate content between pages is not as much an issue (although you need to be careful at the same time).

I much prefer having one website.

The problem with having just one country specific domain

I have some country specific domains  (ie domain.co.nz) that are competitive on many different country Google’s – ie the web sites ranking high on each of Google.com from USA, Google.co.nz, Google.com.au etc.

However, in order to get high on each search, I have had to invest incredibly large amounts of effort into linking in order to beat the bias of each countries domains. I could have just created a separate .com website and geotargeted it. However, there had already been significant linking resources put into the .co.nz website and got it positioned well. We did not want to wait the six+ months of Google’s sandbox to get a new web site ranking well for such very competitive phrases.

How to create a multi country website

You need a homepage specific to each country, and a number of other pages that are for that particular country as well. Google likes domains better if they have more than one page. Each subdirectory is becoming a mini web site, therefore it needs more than one website page in order to be treated as an authority “web site” in its own right. I like to have a homepage, contact page, and about us page as the minimum number of pages for each country.

Once you are into a country page, you need to see the other pages specific for that country. I like using flags as country identifiers.

Placing people in pages via Geo targeting by IP address

Geographic targeting by IP number is a great help for placing people into their own specific part of a web site. But given that Google is a USA spider, you also need to let Google see all the other countries pages, and not just restrict it to USA website pages. You can set a browser cookie based on Geotargeted country, or the first country specific page that is entered. But then you must allow people to change their country and see the other pages as well, overriding that initial cookie setting.

Avoiding Duplicate content

Having multiple homepages, one for each country, and duplicating other pages brings about the duplicate content issue. With multi country web sites, I work very hard to create unique copy for each page. Particularly making sure that the words around the first instance of the search phrases are unique. But also making sure that the remainder of the pages are different in some way. Spinning the content like you need to spin articles is one way.

If you are creating hundreds of pages per country, and duplicating this out per country, then you need intelligent formulas for each pages opening paragraphs. I insert the country name into opening paragraphs and have numerous versions of opening paragraphs that are randomly selected for the pages.

ie

Welcome Canadian visitors to our pages showcasing Auckland Hotels
Welcome Spanish visitors to our Auckland Hotels page on Domain.com.

You can see the unique content around the keyword “Auckland Hotels” on each version, and the added uniqueness of adding mention of the country.

Its hard work

Yes, it’s tough work creating specific website pages for each country, and specifically geotargeting for Google. But its definately worth it when you factor in the lower number of inbound links required to rank each countries pages high.

All the best with creating websites that are geo targeted for Google country specific searches. Click to see more SEO Articles by New Zealand based SEO consultant SearchMasters.

Increase Sales By Properly Using Google’s Adwords

Most Net users use Google and different search engines on an everyday basis to find info, products, services and more. Most website owners can realize that Google directs 2 to 3 times as much traffic to their web site than Yahoo and MSN combined. Thus, it might be a smart plan to pay Google to send centered traffic to your website. This could be accomplished by registering for Google’s advertising service – Adwords.

You may already be familiar with this service and don’t even grasp it. Adwords are the paid advertisements that show up on the proper aspect of Google’s search results below “Sponsored Links.”. Adwords also appear on many industrial and private pages as a manner for the website owner to create a little cash from their website. These advertisements sometimes carry the caption, “Ads by Goooooogle” at the top. The service is termed a pay-for-click service as a result of Google will charge you each time an Web User clicks on your advertisement and visits your website.

Adwords could be a terrific complement to any existing advertising campaign, however most likely should not be used as the only promoting channel for your website. This program allows you to manage your advertising budget by supplying you with the power to set the maximum price that you’re willing to pay, per click, and additionally a maximum allowable daily advertising budget. You decide on the keywords that you would like to target, bid on the most per click value you’d prefer to pay, and Google can send centered traffic to your website. According to Google, Adwords text advertisements boast a commonplace click-through rate four to 5 times over traditional banner ads.

Because you’re paying Google per click, you would like to make sure that your traffic is highly targeted for your website. It doesn’t create sense to pay a heap of cash for a ton of click-troughs and not generate any revenue for your business. It’s necessary that you just follow a few tips to confirm that you simply don’t waste your precious advertising dollars:

Choose Specific Keywords

It is smart to avoid selecting keywords that are too vague or general. To get highly qualified prospects you have got to decide on terribly specific keywords. This means, competition for the keyword can be lower, and it will cost less per click, and you won’t be throwing money away on expensive, unqualified leads. For example, if you only sell Green Widgets, don’t bid on the term “Widgets” it’s too broad and you’ll get hold of clicks from folks searching for “Red Widgets”

Use Geographical Targeting

It is smart to start out small by limiting your advertisement’s reach to a specific area. This manner you’ll see the impact it will have on sales without spending a heap of money. Soon, you can expand to other regions; go national, or maybe global. If your business only caters to the area people, then you must solely advertise in your town and surrounding localities.

Use Correct Grammar and Spelling

This tip might sound like a no-brainer, however it sometimes goes neglected. Whether they want to admit it or not, a lot of folks are terrible spellers and possess poor writing skills. But, a text advertisement that has misspelled words or doesn’t browse clearly isn’t going to get clicked, and it reflects poorly upon your company. Make certain that you check your ads for each spelling and grammar errors. Have an addict, co-worker or employee proof read your ad before submitting it.

Look at the Competition

Regardless of what sort of product or service you’re promoting, chances are, somebody else is doing one thing similar using Adwords. Hunt for the terms you are seemingly to use in order to size-up the competition. Pay attention to their ad’s wording, titles, or incentives they use. You don’t won’t to make your ad exactly like the competition, but it’s smart to understand what their doing to ensure that your advertisement is going to be effective.

Continue Your Budget

Produce a budget and keep on with it. In marketing, there’s an aphorism, “I waste half my advertising bucks, however, the matter is, I don’t grasp that half”. It’s difficult to understand how effective the Adwords program will be if you’re also utilizing other promoting channels (as you should be). When trying out, give your customers the option to let you recognize how they found your website. If you discover Adwords is paying off, then it could be good to increase your budget. It also might not be terribly value economical to bid for the #1 spot for every keyword. The #a pair of position might be virtually as effective, but value solely half as much.

If your web site doesn’t sell or promote something, then it doesn’t make sense to purchase traffic. If this can be the case, Google will truly pay you to display Adwords advertisements on their websites.
