I have read and heard more and more recently in the media that SEO or Search Engine Optimization will soon be a thing of the past. In its place will be something that has always been there but will have a much larger profile and this will be all about one’s Online Presence and Social Media. Whether this is media hype raised by the many people who have never taken the time to learn the basic, simple fundamentals of SEO remains to be seen. In the meantime, however SEO is still very much alive and kicking and I will explain in some detail here what it is and why you should still know about it.
SEO includes preparing, creating and promoting your site in the best way possible. It is similar to say building a car. When you start out you know it should have a body, it should have 4 wheels, you have a general idea of where things should go but how much more helpful would it be to know how to build it in such a way that everything works in the best way it possibly can. For instance, if you put a certain type of wheel on there it will go much faster and use less gas in the process. This puts you ahead of the competition then who just make a basic model of car.
The main focus when building your site is to get it appear in the first page of Google and Yahoo so you are going to get a lot of FREE traffic through these major search engines.
Why even bother doing SEO?
There are a lot of reasons but first it gets you FREE traffic and it’s not that hard to do. A lot of people don’t do SEO and therefore you’ll be able to have yours overtake theirs in the search engines. There are a lot of people out there making websites, some just for fun, others for business but many have no idea or understanding about SEO and they don’t do it.
Secondly, you want it to look good and have a friendly feel when people visit. You also want it to be friendly in terms of the search engines also. If the search engines can navigate around easily enough, they see it is full of good easy to navigate content, they will give it their seal of approval by placing it high in their rankings.
It will increase your profits. If you build a site and you haven’t used SEO then you are leaving money on the table because your site is buried somewhere and doesn’t appear at all when people come looking for something in your niche.
How do Search Engines Work?
Search engines constantly ‘spider’ the internet gathering data about websites. Spider is a term you will hear and see a lot in reference to SEO and search engines. So once the data is gathered, they will rank websites according to a variety of factors. They will also penalize or reward based on their results.
In summary, there are things you can do that will help you on a website and similarly there are things you can do that will not help you and will hurt you.
Some Important SEO Factors
The number and quality of backlinks – this is absolutely huge. Some would argue this is the most important factor amongst everything.
Freshness of content and also quality of content. Essentially you want to make sure you are offering content that is not only unique but that it is also current. For example, people may put up a site and months later it is still there, exact same content and nothing has been done with it. Search engines will look at this, see it is stale and they will hurt you for that.
Uniqueness of content – you want to make sure you have stuff on your site that cannot be found anywhere else. What this means in effect is that you have not cut and pasted an exact content from one website to another. This does not offer internet users unique content, does it? What you can do is take a piece of content and put it in your own words then put it on your site. This way, your content is unique because it is your interpretation rather than plagiarism.
Summary
SEO is about making sure your website has the best possible chance of popping up when someone types in your keyword in the major search engines. This gives you the optimum chance of providing that visitor with something they are looking for. The basic rule of economics applies – someone is looking for something, you have it and they buy it. If you remain hidden and don’t let anyone see what you have, it is highly unlikely you will have any success using FREE marketing strategies.
